Nothing Compares to Iowa State Fair's Free Grounds Entertainment

  Iowa State Fair's free grounds entertainment will fill the Fairgrounds with family fun August 9-19. These grounds acts are just part of the more than half a million dollars of entertainment available to Fairgoers free with gate admission. "Nothing Compares" to this mix of art, music, comedy and animals that is sure to provide fun for all ages! The Kids' Zone will be packed with kid-friendly food, entertainment and activities for the youngest Fairgoers.

Meet the 2012 Benton County Fair Queen candidates

Christine Ballard Eight young ladies have entered the 2012 Benton County Fair Queen contest, although one of them (Willow Huber) will be at the Girls Nation event that week, and will not be among those interviewing with the judges. The candidates this year include:  Taylor Jo Arens Taylor is the daughter Dan and Dena Arens.  She has two brothers, Tyler and Nathan.

Vinton Night: CR Kernels recognize small towns, armed forces personnel

Vinton residents watch the fireworks after the game. Bill Ervin threw out a first pitch. Ann Lent gave the official announcement to "Play Ball." Several other Vinton residents, mostly children, participated in the annual Vinton Night at Veterans Stadium. Vinton also shared the evening with Independence and the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight. The special jerseys worn by the Kernels that night were sold in a silent auction to raise money for futur flights.

Amy Van Wechel joins Mossman & Mossman law firm

Amy Van Wechel has joined the Mossman & Mossman firm as an attorney. When Amy (Landrus) Van Wechel was in high school she worked with John Mossman at the Vinton swimming pool, where Amy (and John’s brother, Burns) were lifeguards and John was a manager.  Now, Amy has begun working with John again, helping people in a different way. She is now an attorney at the Mossman & Mossman law firm, working with John and his father, Mark.

Railroad historian discusses Iowa's forgotten railroad towns

  Ever hear of New Buffalo, Iowa? How about Flemingville? They were among the 65 settlements or potential settlements in very early Linn County. In his talk at the Center Point Depot Museum, June 24, retired Kirkwood professor Dr. Peter Jaynes said the railroad pretty much decided which early communities lived and which ones died. The two mentioned didn’t get a railroad and died.

4th Street Diner News

    The 4th Street Diner will be CLOSED on Sunday, July 8th.   On Monday, June 4th, the afternoon activity was a Pepper Card Party. There were 4 tables of players.  Don Selken won 1st place with 304 points.  Clete Friedman won 2nd place with 254 points.  Geri Shaffer won 3rd place with 218 points.  After cards, refreshments were served by the card club.

Vinton Garden Club News: Ladies plan garden therapy, Fair projects

  VINTON GARDEN CLUB June 27,2012   The Vinton Garden Club member of the National Garden Clubs, Inc. Central Region, Federated Garden Clubs of Iowa, Inc. and District II met at the fairgrounds office for their June 27th meeting.  Nine members attended with flowers from their gardens for a design and Horticulture workshop.

AmeriCorps NCCC Class 18 Corps Member Spotlight: Kevin Zachary

  By: Rachel Lebeaux   Name: Kevin Zachary Hometown: Red Bluff, Calif.   Kevin is currently serving as a member of Cedar 1 with AmeriCorps NCCC at the Vinton Campus. Kevin has a variety experiences that are assisting him in his success as a Corps Member. He has volunteered and worked with the Lassen Volcanic National Park, helping with ranger led programs, field research, visitor information and fee collections.
